This is the first recording of a Haka I’ve seen that manages to capture even a fraction of the true energy of it. And it’s because there’s so many of them that those boys would have been shaking the ground.
Seeing these boys in their modern uniforms and jackets and backpacks that say NIKE, participating in this ancient ritual, really just drives home what people mean when they say “I am not a costume.” The clothes here are not important. The energy and participation are important.

Whassup y’all, Polynesian here with a lil sumthin sumthin for story time.
I went to high school in Hawaii, where the hakas were the unofficial highlight of assemblies/football games/homecoming/whatever. I’ve never seen one in person quite this size, but I’ve seen them in similar sizes.
I’ve heard many people (usually not from Hawaii) call the haka many things- “weird”, “scary”, “awkward”, “annoyingly loud/emphasized/angry”, etc. I’ve also heard it misnamed as a “war dance.” Yes, hakas are war dances BUT they’re also songs of joy, prosperity, love, etc. It’s common for them to be performed at weddings, important birthdays, commemorations, and things of a similar nature.
Seeing this brought a tear to my eye. I’ve since moved to New York City and, as you can imagine, don’t see many hakas. This is beautiful. This is raw, emotional, powerful, and proud. Bless these young men and their commitment to their culture. Seeing these boys, boys I could have gone to school with, in their pressed pants and suits and sports jackets and joggers, perform with all their heart? Absolutely fucking moving. Wishing them a year full of pride, strength, prosperity and health.

a while back my best friend linked me to a thread on homemade My Little Pony transformation hypnosis tapes
that’s a really loaded sentence so let me ease into it
they were like, hour long recordings you were supposed to lay down and listen to and focus on nothing else, that started off with some relaxation techniques then eased into like, “feel your hands becoming hooves. remember pinkie pie’s happy memories. imagine yourself literally becoming pinkie pie. imagine your pink mane. you are literally pinkie pie”
all with the goal of putting you in a mental state where you were convinced you were this cartoon pony. and it was full of people like “wow! this was so relaxing. i felt like i literally Became rarity”
the problem is that human brains are kind of, buggy? so people, especially if they listened to the tapes too much, started like, accidentally going to this mental state they’d created at random inopportune times. the thread was suddenly full of people desperate to know how to stop it because they were turning into rainbow dash in the middle of driving on a highway to work, or whatever
anyway, i’m just burdened with that knowledge forever, now. i think about it a lot
this post radiates unfathomable amounts of dark energy
